PURE LAND

PURE LAND – China, 2018, 92 min, Drama

Director: Zhenju Sun
Writer: Zhenyu Sun
Jin Feng lives in the mountainous region of the Shanxi province in Northern China. She has two children, with a third on the way. This makes her a target of the Chinese “one-child-policy”, which allows for only one child per woman. The consequence for her is either having an abortion or paying a fine, since family planning is a “national duty” as she is told by the family planning commission which visits her more than once. Despite her best efforts, Jin cannot raise the money to pay the 40,000 Yuan fine, an amount due on the day of the child’s birth. And so the family planning commission forces her to abort her unborn son. This abortion traumatizes Jin severely and sends her into an emotional and mental tailspin. Again and again the ghost of her unborn son haunts her in her house.
